Writer and poet, Laurie Lee painted by Anthony Devas, in 1944. A few years earlier Lee had walked over the Pyrenees from France into Spain at the height of the Spanish Civil War. Interred by the people he wished to help; they thought him a spy - Lee was lucky to come away from it alive. This portrait painted in 1944 reflects a pensive and calm Lee, his long daydream of a gaze belies the many experiences he had already accumulated at age 30.
