Thomas Howard, 2nd Earl of Arundel painted by Peter Paul Rubens around 1629/30. Howard is considered one of England’s foremost art collectors - it was once illegal to import art into England and so collectors just never existed. Howard helped to change all that and make England a preeminent centre of art and heritage - his collection of marble statues now part of the Arundel Marbles held in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.
