This painting was a gift from Winston Churchill to his great friend Aristotle Onassis in the 1960s. For many years it hung in Onassis’s yacht ‘The Christina’ where the two men spent many hours together. This was Churchill’s way of extending his thanks to Onassis for the many hours spent on his yacht, cruising the Mediterranean and Caribbean between 1958 and 1963.
Recently, Christie’s sold ‘Tower of the Koutoubia Mosque’, Churchill’s gift to Franklin D. Roosevelt, for $11.6 million which may be the reason for the upcoming sale of this painting at Phillips on July 3rd.
