Painted a few weeks before the declaration of war in Europe that would last until November 1918. In a letter to Paul’s younger brother, John, Dora Carrington enquires about Paul’s work “in the north”. Perhaps this painting being undertaken at this time… Paul married in 1914 and both he and his brother John would go on to serve at the front as war artists.
