Sir Joshua Reynolds
‘Portrait of Luke Gardiner, 1st Viscount Mountjoy, half-length, in a beige, fur-trimmed coat, white stock and striped red waistcoat’
Luke Gardiner created Mountjoy Square and Gardiner Street in Dublin intended it to be a grand Georgian avenue running from the square to the river Liffey.
However, owing to the Acts of Union in 1801, the economic depression and the drastic fall in demand for townhouses, meant the street was never fully completed. Many of the original buildings were converted into tenements, which were then later demolished.
