Vanessa Bell in Roger Fry’s garden at Durbins in Guildford. Vanessa had travelled to Turkey with Roger and Clive Bell in the spring of 1911 at which time she suffered a miscarriage and mental health breakdown. Clive returned to England leaving Roger to look after Vanessa. A close relationship between them started to form. Returning to England she stayed with Roger at Durbins where their relationship developed further. At the time Virginia had also developed an attraction to Roger and having found out about his affair with her sister, it prompted her to commit to Leonard Woolf.
