There is something soothing about this scene, the way it cocoons the viewer in dappled shade, dividing the view between Edith Olivier and the open gateway. There is a tension in the composition between the swipe of pink and clouds of green foliage. Everything else seems to exist to frame these two elements. Edith and Rex were close friends and Daye (Dairy) House in Wilton Park was a home she shared with her sister Mildred.
