Henry John by Augustus John painted c1925. Henry was born in 1907 and died in 1935, at only age 28. He was painted by Augustus on a number of occasions, Henry being of varying ages. His short life makes these paintings all the more poignant. Of each of the three portraits I have seen, this one seems to me to represent the closest bond between father and son. Augustus has said to have fathered up to 100 children although his last son, Tristan De Vere Cole disputes this claim. “One of the stories attached to him is that whenever he was walking down the King’s Road, in Chelsea, he would pat any passing child on the head in case it was his.”
