Harold Gilman was an English painter who is best known as one of the founding members of the Camden Town Group. He was born in 1876 in Somerset and started painting at a young age when bedridden after a hip injury. He studied at the Hastings School of Art in 1896, and between 1897 and 1901 at the Slade School of Fine Art in London. After a short tour of Spain, he returned to England in 1902 with his new wife, American artist, Grace Canedy.
Here Grace is depicted in the usual style Gilman adopted - fixed still in pensive mood. Gilman’s reputation as a diligent artist is apparent in this scene - he has spent time building up the scene and meticulously capturing a particular grip of the hand and gaze of the eyes. This painting shows Gilman’s early style of smooth small paint strokes which would later evolve into more Impressionist technique.
