Zeitgeist
-
Zeitgeist features Kathleen Woodward who Brockhurst married and renamed Dorette. This and other portraits of her submitted annually to the RA from 1933 to 1939 presented her in the style of Vermeer, Pierre della Francesca and Botticelli, all artists that influenced him greatly. This portrait has something old masters about it whilst managing to stay somehow contemporary in its sensuality, its title alluding to its age. Woodward once said of her life with Brockhurst ‘Brock was not an easy person to live with – but I still miss him terribly – trying to chronicle the rather unique way of life that was ours – very very difficult going!’
