Haynes settled in Brighton, arriving from Barbados in 1967. He met Simon Watney at the University of Sussex and through Simon and his partner, Mark Rowlands, was introduced to Duncan Grant. Simon and Mark founded the Sussex Gay Liberation Front; Tony was an early member. Tony and Duncan became close friends and he sat for Duncan on a number of occasions. In this portrait is a bright textile that can be seen today at Charleston. It was given to Duncan by Simon and Mark who discovered it in a Tunisian Souk on a holiday in 1970.
