Duncan Grant admired the work of Thomas Gainsborough, so much so that he would paint these versions on ‘copy’ days at the National Gallery. After attending a lecture by Roger Fry on Gainsborough, Duncan wrote to him saying that he was almost moved to tears by Fry’s praise of the artist. Even as a copy, this painting is full of the characteristics of Duncan’s vibrant colour and brush strokes and imparts every bit of attitude of the ‘original’.
