Cecil Taylor was a classics teacher at Clifton College (a Bristol public school) and a friend of John Maynard Keynes and Sir John Sheppard who commissioned this portrait. Much of the work was undertaken in Cambridge; the portrait completed in Burford (presumably Oxfordshire) in a house rented by Maynard Keynes in the August of 1909.
