Dig for Victory, 1943, Charles Spencelayh. This somewhat nostalgic painting was produced by Spencelayh as part of a series of works depicting older men and women of the home guard in patriotic, positive pose. The war had brought much hardship and producing much needed staple food was critical. These images show these men and women, with sleeves rolled up, ready to get down into the dirt and do their thing for the war effort. They are morale-boosting images - I love the simple attire and the 'can do attitude' - the tools and make-shift implements as she sets out to work. Is that a bottle of sherry in her tin toolbox?
