*John Aldridge (26 July 1905 – 3 May 1983) was a British oil painter, draftsman, wallpaper designer, and art teacher. He and fellow artists started exhibiting works during ‘open house’ exhibitions in Great Bardfield in Essex. These exhibitions garnered national press attention and attracted thousands of visitors. In 1985, the Fry Art Gallery was established in nearby Saffron Walden with the express aim of highlighting the paintings, prints, wallpapers, books, fabrics and ceramics made by the Great Bardfield art community between 1930 and 1970. Along with friend, neighbour and fellow artist Edward Bawden they designed a series of wallpapers in the 1930s which were distributed by Cole and Son. He spent time both at his home ‘Place House’ in Essex and with friend and writer Robert Graves in the village of Deià, Mallorca.*
